Delamere Spartans is essentially the product of overactive minds. It typifies the way creative minds work. You get an idea in your head, usually at 3am in the morning that just prevents you from sleeping. It just won't go away. The only way to restore your sense of equilibrium is to make it happen.
When the idea of Delamere Spartans came to us, it was a fairly selfish conception. What if we could persuade others to come out of wherever they might be hiding and join us on the trails for muddy, exhausting adventures and re-live the spirit of being a kid. Maybe we might meet a few good people along the way? DX went ahead and used the means we knew best to make our dream a reality. A strong brand, posters, a simple one page website and social media frenzy ensued. The prospect of complete creative control was enticing and an itch we just had to scratch.
After 'meet up one' had been and gone, it was clear that there was a lot of enthusiasm for this project with 8 similarly enthused trail runners attending. We were keen to see just how far we could take this project. We decided to assemble the most unique and defined group of runners around. We just felt compelled to start building an army.
A forum and Facebook pages followed. At first these channels of communication felt like countless hours spent shouting into the abyss, hoping to hear a response. The bravado tone was quickly set and before long an initial buzz became a roar. Momentum was key, and importantly we set the scene – a telling strapline 'Spartans Never Surrender', colourful email broadcasts known as 'The Spear of Sparta', an innovative brand that reflects modern day adventure sport. Above all, Spartans must not be just another '118 118' running club but something completely and utterly modern and different. Trail running is a niche sport and we wanted to turn every convention on its head.
A bold and distinctive full website followed, and with it a manifesto. That's right, a manifesto: it soon became evident that Spartans is not just a club to many, but a way of life. Let's face it, if you're willing to run 10, 20, 50 or even 100 miles through tough terrain, it's not something you can pick up and put down at will. Spartans go through a lot together – over tens of thousands of miles, they've won races, overcome enormous adversity and faced fears. The Spirit of Sparta has become a monumental triumph. The copy we wrote just adds fuel to the flames:
"Spartans are driven on through wind, rain, sleet and snow. Even darkness turns to light in our presence. We are committed to finding our own personal limits: once discovered, we smash through them like a truck on a colossal mirror".
The response has been incredible and one of the most rewarding projects our team has ever known. We're about two and a half years in now and looking back to that 3am brain wave and where it's taken us, it's just mind-blowing. As a community, we have assembled a core of around 85 people and growing, all seemingly keen to take on the treacherous Persians. Perhaps most rewarding of all is the feeling that it is now Delamere Spartans, not DX, who responsibly manage the project's future success.
I can say that without DX’s design and management of our web page our club would not be the fantastic success that it is. Our web page and forum are at the heart of the Club and allow us to connect with each other and to convey the Spirit of Sparta to others.
